Williams, Alfred – (1829-1901)
WILLIAMS (1861 to 1901)
Alfred Williams (Bn 1829 D1901) and his wife, Sarah (Bn 1838), son Alfred (Bn 1 October 1858) and daughter Ada (Bn 1860) are on the 1861 Census for Anerley Vale, and were still living there in 1900 (at No 6). Alfred’s occupation is a Bootmaker.
In 1871, Alfred and Sarah have five sons and a daughter. Alfred J is now 13 and a Gardener, Ada (aged 10), Harold B (aged 8), John Wallace (aged 6), Thomas H (aged 3) and Ernest (aged 1).

On the 1881 Census, it shows them as living at No 6, Anerley Vale, with Mary A Hart, an 87 year old Lodger. Daughter Ada, is a Dressmaker, Harold, a Carpenter, John, a Painter, Thomas (aged 14) a Greengrocer’s Assistant. Ernest is still at school with two new sisters, Maud (aged 8) (Bn 20 May 1872) and Lily (aged 6). All Alfred and Sarah’s children were born in Norwood.
In 1894, Maud married Matthew Camplin and lived at 22 Lullington Road (9 Rooms). On the 1911 Census, Matthew was a Sanitary Engineer at the Crystal Palace, and their son Cleon (aged 15) (Bn 1896), was an Improver Draughtsman at the Crystal Palace (later a Civil Engineer). In 1917, whilst using a drilling machine at a factory in Whitehorse Road, Cleon had a finger of his right hand cut off and was taken to Croydon General Hospital by motor ambulance.
Son, John (Bn 1865 D1904) married Louisa Mugford at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill in 1888, when they were both living in Sainsbury Road, Gipsy Hill.
In 1911, Maud and Matthew had a Boarder, Eleanor (aged 38), who also worked at the Crystal Palace as a Supervisor in the Waiting and Cloakrooms. In 1939, Maud and Matthew were living as a Boarding House Keeper at 11 Gipsy Hill (later No 4 Gipsy Hill).
The father, Alfred died in 1901, after which, Sarah was living at No 4 Palace Road. Son Alfred J, joined the Royal Navy in 1874, .where his character was always remarked as ‘Good/V.Good’. He was 5’2”, brown hair and blue eyes.
