Sylvan Hill

The name of this road perfectly sums up the area as it was in the 1850s in which it is situated. Sylvan Hill started life as just a narrow lane leading to the fields lower down....

Maps and Land Ownership
On the 1800 ‘Inclosure Map’ the land was shown as woodland owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.  Before that the whole area of Upper Norwood was ‘common land’ open to the local residents for grazing their animals and collecting firewood.
