Pipe – 2 Hadlow Place

Robert Pipe (39) (Bn 1842 Suffolk D1918), a Gardener, and his wife, Maria (Bn 1839 Lowestoft D1908), sons Robert (10), William (8) and daughter, Elizabeth (3).  His father, John (Bn 1818) was an Agricultural Labourer in Bungay, Norfolk.

Robert and Maria were married at St Lukes, West Norwood in August 1866.  Her father was a Miller.

Their son Robert (Bn 1 April 1870 and Baptised in 1872 at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill D1943).  Aged 15, Robert became a Telegraph Clerk at Crystal Palace Railway Station at 8 shillings a week, relocating to Victoria Station in 1886.  He later became a Police Constable until he retired, joining the Police at New Scotland Yard on 25 July 1892.  He married Louisa (Bn 1870 D1929) and moved to Clapton Park, E5.

By 1891, the family were living at 4 Palace Road.  By 1901, Maria (aged 62) was living with Elizabeth and another daughter Harriet aged 18, a Shorthand Clerk, plus a Boarder at 18 Palace Square.  Elizabeth was still at 18 Palace Square on the1911 Census, as a Boarding House Keeper, with her younger sister Edith (Bn 1880 D1943 22 Waldegrave Road).
