ORRISS – 43 & 44 Anerley Vale
Herbert Orris (Bn 1855 D1928), a Builder’s Labourer, and wife, Maria Augusta née Pavely (Bn 1861 D1949) (M1889 Bethnal Green), were resident at No 43 Anerley Vale by 1901. They also resided at No 44 (1911 and 1921 Census).
In 1901, they had four sons and two daughters residing with them. In 1911, one son, Edwin Frederick (Bn 1892) was an Assistant Tramway Linesman for the South Metropolitan Electric Tramways (SMET) and in 1939, was a Trolley Bus Overhead Linesman for the London Transport Passenger Board (LPTB).
Another son, Herbert (Bn 1896) became a Carpenter and Joiner (1939). In 1921, he also lived at 44 Anerley Vale, with his wife Audrey née Woods (M1920), his occupation then being a Wheelwright Labourer.
In 1917, son, Alfred George (aged 18), occupation a Cotton Bag Cutter, was temporarily exempt for two months, from WW1, as his mother, Maria, could not work due to her husband Herbert’s serious illness, a confirmed invalid, the result of an accident. She already had two sons serving with the Colours (serving with a regiment in the army) (her other son, Alfred, was married and living in Tooting). After the war, in 1921, Alfred George was a Salesman at Halfords Cycle Accessories in Rye Lane, Peckham.
Daughter, Mildred Caroline (Bn 1902), worked as a typist for the War Office.
