Ann Ebre (Bn 1826 D1889) was the daughter of Thomas Smith (a Shoemaker) (Bn 1796/7) and Susan (née Taylor) (Bn c1791) (M1821 Christchurch, Blackfriars Road, Lambeth) living in Peartree Street, Waterloo Road, Lambeth. On the 1851 Census, Ann’s father Thomas, is a Widower. Ann’s occupation aged 24, is a Waistcoat Maker. Also, on the 1851 Census, it states that Ann has three siblings, Rachel, aged 22, also a Waistcoat Maker; Thomas, aged 18, a Shoemaker and Sarah, aged 13, a Scholar.

In 1861, according to a written statement in the Poor Law book, dated 12 October 1861, “she resided at 6 Anerley Vale, in the Hamlet of Penge, Widow, with three lawful children”, Sarah Ann (aged 7) (Baptised 1854 D1925) (M1869 Charles Frederick Allison); Jane (aged 4) and John (aged 1) (Baptised in 1861 at St John’s Church, Penge).

Ann’s husband John Ebre (deceased) (Bn Ireland D13 September 1860 Penge) had been a Soldier/Sergeant in the Militia for many years, and had no living relatives. They had married on 24 February 1852 in Gillingham, Kent. The Poor Law book in 1861 stated to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor that Ann “was entitled to receive Parish Relief of the Hamlet of Penge, the Said Pauper, being removed from the Parish of Lambeth”.

In 1871 to 1889, Ann, occupation, Charwoman, resided with her daughter Sarah (aged 19) and her husband Charles Allison (aged 20) in nearby Hadlow Place, Anerley Road (no number shown). Also living with her, was her daughter, Jane.
