Carter – 7 Hadlow Place

Also in 1901, at 7 Hadlow Place, lived John (Bn 1873 Norwood) and Eliza Carter (Bn 1874 Norwood) with their son John (Bn 1897) and daughters Beatrice (Bn 1898) and Lily (Bn 1900).  John and Eliza had married on Christmas Day 1895, at All Saints Upper Norwood.

In 1911, John, a Bricklayer’s Labourer/Painter and his family had moved to 38 Anerley Vale.  In 1891, they were living at 8 Paddock Gardens, Westow Street.  In 1881, aged 8, he was living with his parents John and Caroline, three brothers and a sister Elizabeth Susannah (Bn 1875 D1918 2 Essex Mews, Central Hill) at 3 Plummer’s Cottages, Woodland Road.

His sister Elizabeth married a James Arthur Meeks, who during WW1, served in Mesopotamia as a Driver in the Royal Army Service Corp.  In 1920, a Widower, he applied for employment as a Gardener’s Labourer in France for the Imperial War Graves Commission.
