Barff, Arthur (1835 – 1903)

Arthur Barff and his family first appear at 43 Harold Road on a Street directory for 18941 and remain there certainly until the time of the 1901 census.
Arthur was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1835. His father, John Barff is shown on the 1841 Census Return as a Woolstapler, then aged 40, Arthur aged 6 and Caroline aged 7, together with three servants.
Arthur married Mary Elizabeth Fox Hulbert on 4th June 1867 at East Farleigh in Kent. Mary was then 20, and Arthur 32. Mary was born in Tottenham, Middlesex in 1847.
Arthur is described as a retired merchant and banker in the 1881 census return, then living in Merton, Surrey. They then have three sons – Arthur,12, Reginald, 11 and Frederick 5 months.2
By the time of the 1901 census they are living at 43 Harold Road (house named Englefield), (Mary is shown as “Minnie”), but no children are shown as living with them. They have two servants, Rose Carlew (28) born in Broomfield, Kent and Ellen Wood (42) born in Greenford, Middlesex.
Arthur and Mary had seven children3:
Arthur Douglas Barff born 1868, died 1955;
Reginald Merton Barff born 1869, died 1st September1903 at Dear Ismail Khan, Bengal, India, whilst serving as a Captain with 45th Rattray’s Sikhs.
John Alister Barff born 1871 – died 1941
Inez Gwendolene Barff born 1874, died 1877 in Croydon
Mary Evelyn Barff born 1879, died 1880, Croydon
Frederick Russell Barff born 1880, died 1908, Peshawar Bengal, whilst serving with West Yorks. Regiment
Hubert Ernest Barff, born 1886, died the same year aged 2 months
(at 16 Ashbourn Place, Kensington).
Arthur died on 20th January 19033, so it is likely that his widow moved away during that year. She later appears as living in Bath, where she married Herbert Jackson Homer Riccard on 1st April 1929. She died a widow on 2nd April 1936, in Canada.
According to the National Probate record, Arthur died leaving a estate of £14,795.4
Mary left £2,046. 17s 6d in 1936 to her sole surviving son4.
