York, William – (1852-1905)

YORK (1861, 1871, 1881, 1901) 10 & 16 Anerley Vale

In 1871, aged 18, William York (Bn 1852 D1905), a Fishmonger, was a Lodger in Brunswick Place, Anerley Road. He had been resident in Anerley Vale in 1861, living with his parents, William (a Hotel Waiter) (Bn 1824), his mother Elizabeth (Bn 1833), three brothers and two sisters.

In 1875, William married Emma Naomi Kerby (Bn 1847 D1931) at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill and by 1881, they are living at 16 Anerley Vale, with sons William Charles (Bn 1876 D1935) and John Arthur (Bn 1879 D1915). They are still there in 1891, also with daughter, Emma Louise (Bn 1885). In 1901, they are living at 10 Anerley Vale. Emma Louise married and in 1939 was living at 17 Belvedere Road.

In 1921, Emma Naomi (Widow) aged 74, was a Caretaker at Ewen’s Colonial Stamp Market. By 1911 she had moved to 30 Palace Square (next door to Herbert L’Estrange Ewen, who founded H. L’Estrange Ewen Company (stamp importers).

Son William, married Nellie Mitchell in 1914, and enlisted during WW1 in the Royal Field Artillery. He luckily survived and later lived in Thicket Wood Chambers, Anerley.

Son John Arthur (a Labourer/Bricklayer), married Amy Palmer (Bn 1877), had four sons and two daughters, and in 1911, they lived at 240 Rommany Road, West Norwood. Amy was enrolled in Salters Hill School in 1890. John Arthur enlisted the East Surrey Regiment (Pte 8834) in 1915, aged 36. He was Missing, Assumed Dead/Killed in Action September 1915.

He is buried at Loos Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
