LINDFIELD – 12, 16, 17, 18 & 19 Anerley Vale

Peter Lindfield (Bn 1849 D1892), a Labourer/Coal Labourer and wife Eleanor Lindfield née Radford (Bn 1848 D1903) married on Christmas Day 1875.

In 1881 & 1891, they lived at No 18 Anerley Vale with their five children (all born in Norwood). In and 1901 Census, Eleanor, a Widow, is a Grocer and living at No 12.

Their sons, Edward Peter (Bn 23 November 1876 D1940), William (Bn 1879) and their sister Elizabeth (Bn 1880), were living back at No 18 Anerley Vale in 1911 (5 Rooms). The Street Directory for 1915, states Edward as living at No 17 and Henry at No 19. By 1939, Edward is living at 7 Camden Hill Road with wife, Amy.

In 1911, son Henry John (Bn 1878 D1943 ), was living with his wife, Lydia (M1901), and daughter Eleanor, at 16 Anerley Vale (3 Rooms). In 1921, they were living at 19 Anerley Vale. Henry and Lydia later lived at 27 Pleydell Avenue (1940s).

Aged 39, in 1916, Edward had enlisted, occupation, a Fishmonger, when living at 17 Anerley Vale, with the Hunts Cyclists Btn (No 2144/ 438423) 5’6”. The Huntingdon Cyclist Battalion was a Bicycle Infantry Battalion of the British Army and was formed in the Territorial Force in February 1914. It remained in the UK throughout WW1. Men from the Hunts Cyclist Battalion were posted to Yorkshire to patrol the coast in the early part of the war. Eventually, the men, minus their distinctive green bikes, were transferred to other units and posted overseas.
