Born in Norwood in 1843, Mary Ann Paddy was Baptised at All Saints Church, Upper Norwood, on 5 March 1843, to Thomas William Paddy (Bn 1803 Farnborough D17 December 1873 at 3 Anerley Vale aged 70), occupation a Baker, and Elizabeth née Churcher (Bn c1810 D1866 aged 56). Thomas and Elizabeth were married in the Parish of St George, Hanover Square on 27 December 1827. Both are buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
In 1841, parents Thomas and Elizabeth were living in Woodman Row, Westow Hill, with three children, Maria (Bn 1836 D1866), Elizabeth/Eliza (Bn 1839) and Emily (Bn 1840 D1845 aged 4 years old). Emily is buried in All Saints Church, Upper Norwood.
In 1851, Thomas and Elizabeth were still living in Westow Hill, with four children, Maria, Eliza, Mary Ann (aged 8) and Thomas H (aged 5).

Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Thomas H, are on 1861 Anerley Vale Census with 11 year old nephew Frederick Churcher and two Lodgers. Sadly, Elizabeth died in 1866, and just father Thomas and daughter Mary Ann are still there on the 1871 Census, with Mary Ann’s 7 year old son, George Richard (Bn 1864 D1956 aged 93). He became a Builder’s Foreman for Palmer & Co, Beckenham. Mary Ann’s occupation is a Housekeeper. Sadly, father Thomas died in 1873 (at 3 Anerley Vale).
The 1881 Census shows them at No 8 Anerley Vale, Mary Ann, a Laundress and Head of Family, with her son George Richard and niece, Elizabeth. In 1899, George Richard was attacked when he accidentally trod on a man’s foot upon entering the carriage of a train. This resulted in him receiving punches to the head and a broken nose, despite profusely apologising. The attacker was fined £5 including costs.
By 1891, Mary Ann’s brother Thomas (a Widower), occupation a Carpenter/Joiner, has become Head of Family at No 8 Anerley Vale (renting 2 rooms unfurnished on the first floor) living with his son Thomas (aged 9), daughter Jessie (aged 17). Mary Ann is living with them, a Laundress, aged 47.
By 1901, Mary Ann is a Domestic Servant at 36 Lancaster Road, West Norwood.
On the 1911 Census, Mary Ann is living with her son George Richard, his wife and their five children at 41 Elmers End Road, where she died on 8 January 1917, aged 73.
