COSTELLO, MICHAEL (1861 – 1884)
Michael Costello, born in 1861, was living at the Firs, then the Court Royal Hotel, in 1884 shortly after his return from Egypt where he had served as a corporal in the 35th Royal Sussex Regiment.
He had been invalided home suffering from fits. On Thursday 16 October 1884 he was found dead in bed. The post mortem examination, carried out by Dr Miller of Church Road, came to the conclusion that he had struggled whilst having a fit in bed and turning over had strangled himself with the sheet! The jury returned a verdict of “Accidentally suffocated”.
