Hales – 3 and 6 Hadlow Place

William J Hales (Bn 7 August 1873) married Florence Ellen Georgina Adams (Bn 1874 D1964) at Christ Church, Gipsy Hill in June 1892 when they were living at 15 Berridge Road (off Gipsy Hill) both aged 20.  On the 1891 and 1901 Census returns, they were living at 31 Anerley Vale.

In 1911, William and Florence are resident at 3 Hadlow Place (5 rooms), with their eight children.  William, aged 39, is a Bricklayer.  They were still living there in 1913.

Daughter Florence (Bn 8 September 1894 D1946).  In 1911 (aged 18), she was a Boot Shop Assistant.

William (Bn 1895 Norwood) Full name William Richard Edwin Hales.  When he was 16 in 1911, he was a Barber’s Assistant.  During WW1, he joined the 32nd Btn, Royal Fusiliers.  Acting Lance Corporal 20905.  He was Killed in Action 4 October 1916 aged 21 and is buried at Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.

Arthur (Bn 31 August 1897).  In 1911, he was a School Newsboy (paperboy).  In 1939, he and his wife Lilian (Bn 1903), were living at 6 Hadlow Place.  His occupation was a Tram Conductor.

Charles (Bn 27 April 1900).  Full name Charles Henry Thomas Hales.  When he was 23, he married  Florence Mary on 26 December 1923 at St Leonard’s Church, Streatham, when they were living at 87 Wellfield Road, Streatham.  He became a Bricklayer.  They were still living at 87 Wellfield Road in 1939.

Lillie (Bn 1903)

Harold Ernest (Bn 9 November 1904 D1993).  In 1939, he and wife Daisy (M1927), lived at 15 Versailles Road, Anerley Road.

Millicent (Bn 1907)

Howard (Bn 13 December 1910) Full name Howard Frederick John Hales.  In 1936, he was still living at 3 Hadlow Place, his occupation, a Bricklayer.  He married Margaret Irene Hancock on 30 June 1936, at Emmanuel Church, West Dulwich.  She had been living at 45 Rommany Road.  In 1939, Howard and Margaret were living at 154 Gipsy Road.

In 1939, William (now Retired) and Florence, were still living at 3 Hadlow Place.
