Grote was born in Tunbridge Wells. He was living with his parents (above) at 11 Harold Road in 1891. His unusual first name appears to have been his mother’s maiden name. Grote (aged 15 in 1891 census) went on to become a civil engineer. He moved to Canada in 1912 and by 1924 Grote is a politician in Canada. He is elected to the House of Commons of Canada, representing British Columbia constituency of Yale, in a bi-election. He is re-elected for the same constituency in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and becomes Minister for National Defence 17.11.1934- 22.10.1935; and (acting) Minister of Fisheries 17.11.1934-32.8.19351.
