The Charman family were living in at No 20 Anerley Vale by 1881. George Charman (B1842 D1908 22 Anerley Vale) a Carman, wife Caroline (B1849 D1910 Norwood Cemetery, aged 61) with daughter Ellen (B1874 Hadlow Place, Anerley Road D1958), Charlotte (B1875 D1956 25 Anerley Vale) and sons George (B1875 D1896) and Charles (B1877 D1921). There were also Boarders, Stephen Burton (aged 36) a Turncock, who worked for the local water company, opening and closing the water supply, Henry McKye (aged 49) a Potman and his wife Elizabeth (aged 48).
Son Charles (Bn 1877 D1921 22 Anerley Vale) attended Woodland Road School in 1888. He left school in March 1890, marked as ‘Gone to Work’. He had previously attended St Paul’s School in Hadlow Place, Anerley Road.
Daughter Charlotte, was residing at No 25 Anerley Vale on the 1939 Register with her brother William (Bn 1886), a Grocer’s Porter.
On the 1891 and 1901 Census’s, George and Caroline were still living at No 22. Son Charles, a Grocer (B16 April 1877 Anerley Vale D1921 22 Anerley Vale), married Sarah Ward (Bn 1875 D1955) in 1898, and resided at No 38 Anerley Vale (1901) and daughter Edith (aged 1), but returned to No 22 by the 1921 Census. His occupation is a Grocer’s Carmen for Williamsons at 14 Westow Hill.
Charles and Sarah have three daughters (1921), Edith (aged 21), Winifred (aged 19) and Annie (aged 14) and a son, Charles (aged 11). Winifred was a Domestic Servant at No 4 Milestone Road. Daughter Winifred (Bn 1902) married neighbour, Joseph Tripp (Bn 1900) in 1924 and resided again at No 22 on the 1939 Register. Their son Charles, married Grace née Brookes, at Emmanuel Church, Clive Road, West Dulwich in 1937. She had been living at 56 St Gothard’s Road. Joseph Tripp signed as a witness.
In 1911, son Charles (Bn 1877 Anerley Vale D1921) and wife Sarah née Ward (Bn 1875 St Ives, Cambridgeshire) were living at 22 Anerley Vale (6 Rooms). His occupation, a Grocer’s Carman. Also sister Charlotte (aged 35), brother William (aged 25), a Grocer’s Assistant, 3 daughters, Edith (1899), Winifred (1902), Annie (Bn 1906), and Charles (Bn 1910), plus Border, Louis Henley (aged 37), a Grocer’s Warehouseman.
Son William Sefton (Bn 1886 D1944) was a Greengrocer’s Assistant all his life and in 1939, was living at No 25 Anerley Vale with sister Charlotte.
Members of the Charman family were still resident in Anerley Vale from the 1881 Census until at least 1965.
