CARTER – 38 Anerley Vale
John Carter (Bn 1873 D1937), a Bricklayer’s Labourer/Painter and his wife Eliza (Bn 1874) and his family of six children, were living at 38 Anerley Vale in 1911 (4 Rooms). John and Eliza had married on Christmas Day 1895, at All Saints Church, Upper Norwood.
In 1881, aged 8, John was living with his parents John and Caroline, three brothers and a sister Elizabeth Susannah (Bn 1875 D1918 2 Essex Mews, Central Hill) at 3 Plummer’s Cottages, Woodland Road. In 1891, John Carter (aged 18) was living at 8 Paddock Gardens, Westow Street, with his parents and siblings, occupation, a Gardener. By 1901, John and Eliza moved to 7 Hadlow Place, Anerley Road, with their son John (Bn 1897) and daughters Beatrice (Bn 1898) and Lily (Bn 1900).
John’s sister Elizabeth married a James Arthur Meeks, who during WW1, served in Mesopotamia as a Driver in the Royal Army Service Corp. In 1920, a Widower, James applied for employment as a Gardener’s Labourer in France for the Imperial War Graves Commission.
