1881 Joseph Bridges (Bn 1843 D1901), a General Labourer and wife Thirza née King (Bn 1846 D1920) (married 1872) are resident at No 32 Anerley Vale, with their sons William (Bn 1874 D1939), Joseph Albert (Bn 1879 D1956) and step daughter, Ada Shephard (Bn 1868). Ada is still living with Thirza (Widow) at No 32, in 1911 (6 Rooms), occupation a Domestic Servant (aged 43), as was daughter Maud (aged 23). Also, son Joseph (aged 30), a Carman/Furniture Remover, plus two male Boarders.
Joseph and Thirza are still resident at No 32 in 1891, with sons William (17) a Crystal Palace Porter, Robert (Bn 1883), Charles (Bn 1885 D1942), Joseph (Bn 1889), plus daughters, Agnes and Amy (Bn 1880) and Annie (Bn 1888). Daughter Annie was still resident at No 32 with her husband Jeremiah and family in 1939.
Still resident in 1901 at 32 Anerley Vale, Joseph, aged 58, a Carman, wife Thirza (aged 56). Children twins, Agnes and Amy (aged 20), Maude (aged 13) and sons Robert (18) a Stationer’s Collector and Chas (16) a Wine Merchant’s Porter.
Son, Robert Bridges (Bn 1883 D1940 aged 56) married Louisa née Barnes (Bn 1885) in 1908. In 1911, they were resident at No 31 Anerley Vale (3 Rooms), his occupation a Shop Assistant at Stationers. They had one son, Robert Alfred (Bn 1909 D1962), who became an ARP Warden in Penge, in 1939.
By 1921, Robert (senior) was a Postman at 35 Westow Street. He worked as an Auxiliary Postman for nineteen years. On the 1939 Register, he is still a Postman and living at 31 Anerley Vale with wife Louisa. Also at No 31, is son Robert A, wife Beatrice (Bn 1909) and their son, John R (Bn 1938).
Son Charles (Bn 1885) married Bertha in 1912 at All Saints Church, when his occupation was a Police Constable.
Son William (Bn 1874), married Kate (née Jones) (Bn 1875 D1969 aged 94) at St Stephen’s Church, Dulwich Tollgate, Christmas Day 1903, when he was 29 and living at 32 Anerley Vale.
In April 1893, aged 19, 5’8” brown hair and brown eyes, William joined the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge’s Own)/3820 and WW1 Suffolk Regiment 62202. Served in South Africa (1899). His occupation in 1893, had been a Labourer. In 1915, he was declared ‘no longer fit for active service’ with Chronic Rheumatism.
In 1911 (9 Rooms), William, wife Kate and daughter, were living at 6 Camden Hill Road with three student Boarders and 19 year old Susan Tripp, Servant.
By 1921, Kate was a Boarding House Keeper at 64 Longton Grove, Sydenham. They also lived at 37 and 57 Farquhar Road, later at No 7 (1929) and then 1930s to 1950s, she was a Landlady at No 11 Farquhar Road.
Joseph and Thirza’s son Joseph Albert (Bn 1879 D1956), married Minnie at St Paul’s, Hamlet Road in June 1912 and moved to 26 Ridsdale Road, Anerley, later 45 Palace Road. During WW1, he enlisted in the Labour Corps in 1915 (Pte 161926), while he and his wife were living at 26 Ridsdale Road, Anerley. His occupation was a Carman. He survived and in 1921, they were living at 45 Palace Road and he worked for J Dent & Co, Furniture Dealers, 47 & 49 Westow Street, as a Heavy Furniture Porter and Packer. In 1939 they lived at 9 Palace Square.
